WIAA/Dairy Farmers of Washington/Les Schwab Tires State Gymnastics Championships 2012

Tacoma Dome Exhibition Hall | Tacoma, Wash.

The WIAA/Dairy Farmers of Washington/Les Schwab Tires State Gymnastics Championships will be in action for the 23rd consecutive year at the Tacoma Dome Exhibition Hall on Feb. 17-18.

Beginning at 9 a.m. on Friday, about 80 schools will be represented at the state event competing for a total of 100 awards. Eight 2A/3A teams and four 4A teams will compete for the team titles. There are five scored categories of competition that include the bars, beam, vault, floor routines, and all-around competitor.

Linda Wren, Tournament Manager for State Gymnastics since 1997, is a veteran in conducting this meet for over 200 student-athletes.  Announcing the event for the third year is Adolfo Capestany, as he does so for many other WIAA State Championship events.

Day one showcases participants competing in each of the four events (bars, beam, vault, and floor routine) to determine the individual All-Around Champion as well as the Team Titles. The top 16 placers for 2A/3A and top eight placers for 4A in the four events move on to the finals competitions on Saturday.

Day two medals go to individual participants that qualified from day one in each event and finish in the top eight or top four in 2A/3A and 4A respectively. Individual competitors are spotlighted in each routine, as the events are rotated through one at a time.

“Most gymnasts have been working hard since they were three or four years old,” Wren said. “The spotlight format allows us to acknowledge and appreciate that hard work.”

Schools returning with previous 4A State Championship familiarity include Mead High School who has been in the top four team finishers the last two years and Woodinville High School who won the State Title from 2007-2010 but did not qualify for State in 2011. Newport High School won the 2A/3A title in 1999-2001, again from 2006-2008 and, after moving up to 4A, is the reigning champions from 2011. In the 2A/3A classification, Kamiakin High School, returning champs will not be competing as a team, but has some individual competitors; while challengers include Columbia River High School and Auburn Mt. View High School for the team trophy.
