At its January 23 meeting, The WIAA Executive Board approved a number of modifications to winter State Championshp events in compliance with the Washington State Department of Health. The changes summarized below were made to maximize the opportunities for participation during State Championships.
BOWLING - February 3-5 - Narrows Plaza Bowl, University Place
The modifications to the bowling schedule and format were announced in a previous release. A detailed list of those changes can be found on the WIAA website.
CHEERLEADING - February 4-5 - Battle Ground High School
The closing ceremonies/parade of teams will be eliminated and trophies will be presented virtually on Saturday night after everyone has left the facility.
BOYS SWIM & DIVE - February 17-19 - King County Aquatic Center, Federal Way
Since only two (2) pools can be utilized at a time (due to a lack of facility lifeguard staffing), the diving prelims and finals will be held on Thursday, February 17.
MAT CLASSIC WRESTLING - February 18-19 - Tacoma Dome
In order to minimize the number of people and traffic flow on the floor, cheerleaders will be restricted to the spectator areas only and one-way lanes will be set up for staff. The practice session on Thursday will be cancelled and measures will be put in place to limit the time inside the Dome. The parade of champions will be limited to the finalists only. While alternatives to the regional format were considered, regional qualifying will take place as it has in the past.
GYMNASTICS - February 25-26 - Sammamish High School, Bellevue
The individual finals, which are typically held on day two of the meet, were eliminated, which also eliminated the need to utilize Thursday, February 24. Individual champions will be determined based upon a single performance instead. The 2A/3A schools/individuals will compete on Friday while 4A schools/individuals will compete on Saturday.
DANCE/DRILL - March 25-26 - Yakima Valley SunDome
In order to minimize congregating between sets, the walkway will no longer be closed (etiquette for dance/drill competitions prohibits movement around the court during the performance). Spectators will be allowed to sit on the same side with the participants in order to spread out the crowd.
