WIAA LEAP Committee Raises Over $2,100 For InvestED
TACOMA, Wash. – The WIAA’s LEAP Committee raised $2,169.50 during its annual “Coins For A Cause” fundraiser at the 2013 WIAA/Dairy Farmers of Washington/Les Schwab Tires Gridiron Classic at the Tacoma Dome.
The money raised was donated to InvestED, a non-profit that partners with 660 schools and assists 16,500 students with small amounts of short-term, item-specific, need-based funding. The mission of InvestED is to provide immediate help for students in need and to encourage students to stay in school, return to school or get involved with their community.
The LEAP (Leadership through Education, Activities, and Personal Development) Committee has performed the “Coins For A Cause” fundraiser every year at the Gridiron Classic and the Hardwood Classic since 2009, raising over $26,000 during that span. The money has been donated to different non-profits over the last four years including Special Olympics Washington, Northwest Harvest and most recently, InvestED
This winter, the LEAP Committee has partnered with Projekt Karma to create a fundraising challenge between WIAA member schools, with the winning school receiving a variety of prizes along with being honored at halftime of the State Basketball Championships (Hardwood Classic). The fundraising challenge will take place Jan. 1, 2014-Feb. 28, 2014. For schools interested in joining the competition, click here.
The WIAA LEAP Committee is comprised of 16 high school juniors and seniors who are involved with WIAA events, meetings and community projects.  The Committee includes students from all across the state with at least one student representing a school from each of the WIAA’s six classifications and nine WIAA Districts. The students actively contribute to the WIAA as the voice of Washington’s nearly 230,000 student-participants.
