Jenna Moser and Drew Wallen Named 2014 Smart Choices Scholarship Winners

RENTON, Wash. – The WIAA, Dairy Farmers of Washington, and Les Schwab Tires announced Jenna Moser of Colton High School and Drew Wallen of Auburn Riverside High School as the recipients of the second annual Smart Choices Scholarship.
“The 2014 recipients are a couple of amazing student-athletes,” Executive Director Mike Colbrese said. “This scholarship was intended to honor students that are well-rounded in not only academics, athletics and activities, but in community service and leadership as well.  Andrew and Jenna went above and beyond the expectations of this scholarship in their efforts at their schools and in their communities.”
The winners each receive a $5,000 scholarship to the school of their choice.  Moser will be enrolling at the University of Washington where she plans to pursue a degree in architecture.  Wallen has committed to Central Washington University to play football and study broadcast journalism.

Moser is a three-sport athlete for the Wildcats, lettering all four years in each of her three sports: volleyball, basketball and softball.  An accomplished athlete, Moser was named the WIAA State Athlete of the Week twice, Associated Press 1B Player of the Year, Washington Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association (WIBCA) Female Athlete of the Year, and was a five-time sportsmanship award winner.  In addition to being named to all league in every sport she participated in, Moser competed in nine state championships capturing the title in seven of those contests.
What is more impressive than her athletic accomplishments is what Moser has done in the community and as a student leader at Colton.  Moser was a member of the Honor Flight Committee, which raised over $1,500 to send two local veterans on an honor flight to Washington, D.C.  Currently, Moser serves as Colton’s ASB President where she represents the entire student voice for the Wildcats.  A Future Farmers of America (FFA) member since her sophomore year, Moser has also served her peers as the Freshman Class President, ASB Secretary and National Honor Society President.

Wallen, the male recipient, had an equally successful high school campaign.  A letterwinner and captain in basketball and football, Wallen was the South Puget Sound League (SPSL) 4A Defensive Back of the Year, and was a First-Team wide receiver.  As a Raven he set the school’s single-game receiving yards record (244) to earn the MaxPreps Player of the Game Award, an accolade he garnered three times.  For his efforts on the gridiron, he was selected to compete in the East versus West all-star football game.
Wallen branched out of the athletics realm during his junior and senior years to participate in drama and music.  The list of leadership responsibilities runs long for Wallen as he served as class president each of his first three years of high school, before taking on the responsibility of ASB President as a senior.  In addition, he was the student leader behind the “Save It Seattle, Don’t Text and Drive Campaign,” which brought former Seattle Seahawk Golden Tate to Auburn Riverside.
In the community, Wallen has volunteered his time at the Auburn Food Bank, assisted at youth football camps and was a member of the Oso Mudslide Relief Group.
“The Dairy Farmers of Washington and Les Schwab Tires created the Smart Choices College Scholarship program in an effort to recognize outstanding youth that are making a difference in our communities and to help improve their opportunities to access funding for higher education,” said Jeff Steele, Director of Retail Marketing and Business Development for the Washington Dairy Products Commission.
Along with the Class of 2014 Hall of Fame Inductees, the recipients will be honored at the WIAA Hall of Fame Luncheon, May 7 at the Renton Pavilion Event Center.  Tickets for the event are on sale and can be purchased through the WIAA website.
“At Les Schwab Tires, we are very proud of our association with the Dairy Farmers of Washington and the WIAA," Vice President of Marketing for Les Schwab Tires Center Brian Capp said. "Through our combined efforts, we help support young people as they strive to achieve their goals and develop winning talents that can last a lifetime. Our Smart Choices College Scholarship program is just one more way we are trying to make a difference in our communities."
