RENTON – The WIAA is pleased to announce Anacortes’ Dylan Holland and Mead’s Alea Acosta as the featured Student Spotlights for the month of October. Cross Country star, Holland, is a senior at Anacortes High School and was awarded the WIAA Athlete of the Week honors after finishing first in the 5000m with a time of 15:41.49 in the Division 1 race at the 35th Annual Nike Portland XC Invite. Going into the State Championship Meet, Holland has run the fastest time in the state among 2A boys, according to Athletic.net.
Soccer standout, Acosta, is a senior at Mead High School in Spokane and earned WIAA Athlete of the Week honors after scoring six goals and recording four assists in four wins. The Cal-State Fullerton commit also netted the game-winner in the Panthers’ 1-0 victory over rival Mt. Spokane. The Panthers (10-5) lost in a PK shootout against 2014 4A State Champion Central Valley in the district playoffs this week.
The WIAA launched its Activities Matter page at the start of the 2015 school year. The page is designed to be a resource for member schools and their communities to support the case for interscholastic sports and activities. Activities Matter consolidates a variety of dynamic resources, programs, and original content to highlight the long-term benefits associated with student participation in sports and activities.
The monthly “Student Spotlight” section is dedicated to highlighting two student participant success stories from around the state. The chosen students are selected from the pool of Athlete of the Week winners.
